Incentive to worse performance

I came across a talk from Dan Pink about the science of motivation and found it interesting because leading universities confirmed what I have claimed for some time financial incentives can result in a negative impact on overall performance – this s what Dr Bernd Irlenbusch, London School of Economics is quoted for concluding from a study.

I have over the years noticed how introducing measurement (and incentives) in an organisation change behaviour and helps to achieve the goals of achieving what is measured but it takes focus away from the bigger and long term goal. It helps to do things well but not to do the right things…
