Several of the leading mobile phone manufactures have stated they will back a universal charger. Does this means new mobile phones will be shipped without a charger ? If yes, will the manufactures ask the customers to buy a charger separately if they don’t have one (and pocket the saving) or will a charger be provided to customers that need one a charger (probably not)?
Does the decision just mean we will have the drawers full of chargers with the same connection? If this is the answer, then it will is difficult to see how the number of chargers will be reduced or the environmental waste impact reduced. Not to mention every single spare charge will have to be replaced too. The most interesting part in the announcement seems to be the aim to reduce standby energy consumption by 50%
It will be interesting what a universal charger will mean in practice.
